WELLNESS ON THE GO!

Walking downtown London

Welcome to this month’s edition of “Living Your Best Life”! As I prepared for my first retreat of the year, I pondered the perfect theme for May’s blog. With summer approaching and travel plans ramping up for work and vacation alike, I realized focusing on maintaining wellness while traveling would be incredibly timely. Thus, “Wellness on the Go” was born!

Traveling often presents unique challenges to staying healthy. A couple of  weeks ago, I took a red-eye flight from San Francisco to London, with an 8-hour time difference. Prioritizing sleep and hydration was crucial. I filled my water bottle after passing through security and aimed to align my sleep schedule with London time by staying awake during the flight. Equipped with plenty of reading material on my iPad, I managed to start my journey on a positive note.

Some of my personal wellness categories to focus on when on the move are:

A. Nutrition

Travel-Friendly Snacks: It’s easy to succumb to unhealthy airplane food, which is often high in calories and sodium. To combat this, I recommend packing simple, nutritious snacks. Think along the lines of three-ingredient bars, nuts, and fruit. Pre-ordering a special meal like a fruit plate can also help you stay on track.

Dining Out: While traveling, dining out becomes more frequent. I aim for balanced meals, enjoying one elaborate meal a day and keeping others simple. The goal is to savor local cuisine without feeling restricted. Skipping meals isn’t advisable as it often leads to overeating later. Staying hydrated is paramount; incorporating water-rich foods, like fruits and vegetables, is an excellent strategy.

B. Fitness

Upon landing in London, my cousin invited me to join her for a workout. Despite my initial fatigue, I’m glad I went. I opted for a light workout, which helped me feel rejuvenated after the long flight. During our retreat at Alladale Reserve in the Highlands, we practiced yoga twice daily and embarked on invigorating hikes. Returning to London, I utilized the Equinox app for easy workouts,(another great app is NIKE) always carrying resistance bands and a travel mat. Walking tours are another fantastic way to stay active—my cousin and I clocked 17 km exploring London’s charming neighborhoods.

C. Lifestyle Travel Tips

Packing for Wellness: Essential wellness items include workout gear that can double up for everyday wardrobe, healthy snacks, supplements, a sleeping mask, and earplugs.
Routine Maintenance: Maintain a consistent sleep routine, meal schedule, and self-care practices even while traveling.

Local Wellness:Explore local wellness opportunities such as visiting spas, trying local health foods, or joining fitness classes.

Pack smart and Travel Light: I can't stress this enough: less is more, both in travel and in life. Give yourself the gift of freedom and exploration without the burden of material things and heavy luggage.
