Why Go On A Yoga Retreat
As I was preparing to leave Athens for Lefkada, where I was hosting our Deep Dive Yoga and Meditation Retreat with Caramia Tambornino, I was reflecting on a compelling topic: Why do people choose to go on a yoga retreat?
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of organizing and leading various yoga retreats in both local and international locations. Each one has been special in its own unique way, offering distinct experiences and benefits.
Before attending my first retreat in Bali as a participant, I often wondered who attended these retreats, why they decided to go, and how one chooses the right retreat.
Now, decades later, and finding myself on the opposite end as a retreat organizer for other teachers—and as a retreat leader—I’ve observed that people who choose to go on retreats usually recognize the need to create space for themselves and connect with like-minded individuals. Age truly doesn’t matter. There are different kinds of people: old, young, gay, straight, individuals, couples, yogis and occasionally people that have never practiced yoga before. What they all share is a warm, kind, and friendly nature, a readiness to explore the places they visit, and a desire to start or deepen their practice, whether they are new to yoga or have been practicing for years.
So, why go to a yoga retreat?
People attend retreats for various reasons, primarily seeking a break from their daily routines and a chance to rejuvenate. Retreats provide a peaceful environment for stress relief and relaxation, allowing for introspection and emotional healing. They help deepen spiritual practices like yoga and meditation, promote physical health through fitness activities and nutritious meals, and offer personal development through workshops. Many retreats include detox programs to purify the body, foster a connection with nature, and build a sense of community with like-minded individuals. Participants can learn new skills, take time for reflection, and set goals, making retreats a unique opportunity for growth, healing, and renewal.
How To Pick The Best Retreat For You
A. Ask yourself what you want to gain from the experience.
Are you seeking more yoga, meditation, fun movement, relaxation, adventure, or travel? Whatever your priorities are, keep them in mind when booking a retreat.
B. Research the Instructors
I highly suggest you try to take the instructor's class a couple of times at least to make sure you like their teaching style. If you don't have that option, look into the credentials and teaching styles. Read reviews and testimonials from past participants to get a sense of their experience.
C. Consider the Location
Choose a destination that excites and relaxes you. Consider the climate, scenery, and cultural experiences. Do you prefer cold climates and wild nature, the Greek islands, or tropical beaches? Do you like the buzz of a lively city or more secluded, remote places? Think about what environment will help you feel most at peace and inspired.
D. Check the Schedule and Activities
Ensure the retreat’s schedule aligns with your goals and interests. Better yet see if you can customize your activities to your liking (I personally love that) .Look for a balance between yoga sessions and free time or adventure. Remember, in a retreat, everything should be optional—you are your top priority.
E. Evaluate the Accommodations and Amenities
Review the accommodation options and their comfort levels. Check for additional amenities like spas, pools, or hiking trails to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
F. Read Reviews and Testimonials
Seek out honest feedback from previous attendees. Google is a great resource.
G. Consider Your Budget and Quality of your retreat
Choose a retreat that fits within your budget. Consider all expenses, including travel, accommodation, and additional activities. Remember to prioritize quality—this is one of your best vacations, after all.
